Pursuing an idea to offer affordable yet elegant homes, Frank Lloyd Wright developed the American System- Built portfolio of house designs.
Originally comprising of 7 different models of single- family homes and duplexes, the plans offered an inclusive package of standardized building components ranging from frame to finish. The components were pre-manufactured, delivered to the building site, and assembled by a designated contractor.
In partnership with the Arthur Richards Co., of Milwaukee, approximately two dozen American System- Built homes were contructed in several mid- western cities between 1914 and 1917. Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, a group of six System- Built homes can be found in Milwaukee. The B1 house is open for interior tours through the auspices of Wright in Wisconsin.
