This ornament, developed by the Milwaukee Art Museum, commemorates the Museum's history and pivotal moments of growth. The Milwaukee Art Museum is an architectural landmark, comprising three buildings designed by three legendary architects: Eero Saarinen, David Kahler, and Santiago Calatrava. Saarinen completed the modernist War Memorial Center in 1957. Kahler executed the brutalist concrete addition in 1975, when a dramatic growth in the collections necessitated more gallery space. Calatrava's sculptural, postmodern addition to the Museum opened in 2001. The Quadracci Pavilion, as it is formally named, features the iconic Burke Brise Soleil, a movable sunscreen with a 217-foot wingspan that opens and closes twice daily. November 2015 marked the first-ever renovation and reinstallation of the Museum's Collection Galleries and the addition of a lakeside entrance.
