From 1913 - 1922, Wright designed and built the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Japan. For decades this landmark served as an architectural icon for the city, during which time it survived several devastating earthquakes, until it was demolished in 1968. Fortunately the main entrance and hotel lobby were preserved and reconstructed in 1923 at the Museum Meiji-mura, an open-air architectural museum and theme park near Nagoya in Aichi prefecture, Japan. The details of this art glass panel are based on a peacock motif rug designed by Wright for the luxury hotel. The peacock theme was recurring, also to be found as a mural in "Peacock Alley', the lavish main lobby where the affluent would socialize. The detail in this panel is similar to many geometric Oya (soft volcanic rock) carvings he designed throughout the hotel.
